Certified Fitter & Supplier

Other Exercise Programs

Since 2004, and previously known as New Horizons Physical Therapy, we have been San Diego’s ONLY Oncology Rehabilitation specialty practice. We continue to offer advanced, individualized care utilizing the most advanced technology available combined with our extensive clinical knowledge, training and experience in the specialty areas of oncology, lymphedema and exercise physiology.

Our practice offers Comprehensive Edema Management & Cancer Rehabilitation Services and is limited to treating clients diagnosed with edema, lymphedema, or cancer. We DO NOT provide physical therapy services for any other condition or diagnosis.

New clients will quickly identify that our practice is unique. We are a practice of two Doctors of Physical Therapy with no support staff. Therefore, we are directly involved in all aspects of your care: from answering the phone and scheduling appointments, communicating by phone or text with you or your physician, as well as providing all treatment interventions on a 1:1 basis. Our scheduled treatment sessions are 75 minutes in duration, providing ample time to address your condition individually and without being rushed.

As a supplier, we can provide all required compression bandaging materials and supplies for treatment intervention as well as for self-management. As a Certified Fitter, compression garments (and other compression products) can be ordered directly from all manufacturers (BSN-Jobst, Juzo, Lohmann & Rausher, Medi-USA, Sigvaris, Solaris, Wear Ease and Prairie Wear), to provide the best option for self-management. In addition, replacement products can be ordered at appropriate intervals (every 4-6 months) to ensure continued therapeutic benefit from ongoing wear.

If participation in a formal, structured Prescriptive Exercise Therapy (PET) program is not possible, we offer two other instructional options that may allow you to be successful in participating in an independent exercise program on your own.

ACT Program: Our After Cancer Treatment (ACT) Home Program allows for instruction in the basics of the formal PET Program to be performed at home. Within six sessions, we can instruct and advise clients hoe to implement a safe, specific exercise program that closely mimics the PET program at home. This program requires minimal equipment and can be performed with modifications based on time restraints for participation.

Independent Fitness Program: If you prefer to utilize a gym membership for your individualized exercise program, we offer an Independent Fitness Program (IFP) that provides detailed instruction on how to identify and correctly utilize standard gym equipment to replicate the exercises performed in the PET program. Over six sessions, a comprehensive assessment occurs to identify your current fitness level for the performance of both a resistive and an aerobic training component of the fitness program. For resistance training, a One Repetition Maximum (1RM) test is performed to identify strength for specific exercises. A validation session identifies the initial resistance parameters for each exercise, and instruction on how to perform the correct exercise for the targeted muscle group(s) is performed. For aerobic training, a formal cardiorespiratory test (Bruce Protocol) is performed to identify your current MET and VO2 Max values. These values are critical to identifying initial Target Heart Range for aerobic training to be maximized. Initial parameters for treadmill ambulation are calculated to identify the ideal training zone for optimal outcome. Detailed photos and written instruction for program progressions and tips on how to maximize your success from exercise participation is provided.
